What is energy efficiency?

Energy efficiency is an essential component for the sustainable development of a business.

Energy efficiency involves using energy more productively, generating the same output with less input. By using energy productively, we get more for what is used.

According to Directive 2012/27 of the European Parliament and of the Council, “energy efficiency” means the ratio between the result consisting of performance, services, goods, or energy and the energy used for this purpose.

Definitions of energy efficiency terms according to Directive 2012/27 of the European Parliament and of the Council

  • “Energy savings” = the amount of energy saved, determined by measuring and/or estimating consumption before and after the implementation of an energy efficiency improvement measure, while ensuring the normalization of external conditions that affect energy consumption.

    “Energy efficiency improvement” = an increase in energy efficiency resulting from technological, behavioral, and/or economic changes.

    “Energy service” = a physical benefit, utility, or good obtained from a combination of energy with an energy-efficient technology or action, which may include the operation, maintenance, and control activities necessary for providing the service, delivered under a contract and which, under normal conditions, has been proven to result in an improvement in energy efficiency or primary energy savings, in verifiable and measurable or estimable terms.

    “Energy service provider” = a natural or legal person who provides energy services or other energy efficiency improvement measures to the installation or premises of the end consumer.

    “Energy performance contract” = a contractual agreement between the beneficiary and the provider of an energy efficiency improvement measure, verified and monitored throughout the contract period, whereby investments (activities, supply, or services) in the respective measure are paid proportionally to a level of energy efficiency improvement agreed in the contract or according to other agreed criteria regarding energy performance, such as financial savings.
